Penguin Publishing Company has specially selected you to help design a new book cover for an upcoming anthology (collection of multiple stories and texts) devoted to DYSTOPIAS. The edition will include a special section dedicated to a discussion of the significance of dystopias in our modern lives and the ways in which these kinds of societies reflect potential visions of the future in which humans are controlled and manipulated in horrific ways. Mr. Filch, the book-jacket designer, has given you five cover options to choose from.
Using your knowledge and experience studying dystopian unit's themes and the texts we covered in our unit, you will select a cover from the images below that you believe BEST represents the concept of dystopias as seen in our unit. Keep in mind the many themes and concepts we have talked about in relation to DYSTOPIAS. You must provide convincing reasons for your cover choice or Mr. Filch will choose a different student designer and you will lose all bragging rights!
REMEMBER: You are selecting a cover that is representative of the CONCEPT OF A DYSTOPIA, not of a particular text we studied. It should be applicaple (illustrative) of ALL of the texts we studied, in some way. Your job will be to link the image to our unit texts.
STEP ONE : Look through the available options below. Fill in the graphic organizer on the pro's and con's of using each image for the cover design of the dystopia anthology. Pro= What dystopian characteristics does the picture convey? Con= What elements of the picture would not make it seem dystopian or might not make it a good book cover image?
Option #1:
Option 2:
Option #3: Option #4: Option #5:
DONE WITH YOUR PROs AND CONs???:After completing the pro's and con's handout, select the ONE image that you believe BEST represents the overarching concept of a dystopia.
